If an individual has obtained permanent residence through marriage to a United States citizen, the individual may apply for citizenship three years after the date on which his permanent residence was granted. If the individual has obtained legal permanent residence through another family member or through employment, the individual may apply for citizenship five years after the date on which his permanent residence was granted. The applicant for citizenship must demonstrate the ability to speak and write English and pass a test on United States government and history. A new citizen is eligible for the benefits of United States citizenship: the ability to vote, to serve as a juror, to hold jobs available only to United States citizens, and to sponsor relatives. A citizen also has the right to file applications to bring their parents, children, spouse or siblings to the United States as permanent residents.
At Nina Qureshi, Esq. we will consult with you regarding your eligibility for citizenship, file your application with USCIS, help you prepare for the citizenship interview and exam, and attend the Naturalization interview with you at your local USCIS office.
